What to do when your chimney is

Smoking

Smoking problems are usually caused by

A buildup of creosote, or soot in the walls of the smoke chamber and flue
Wet, or green wood that is not properly seasoned
Wind or downdraft coming down the chimney

The grate being too far towards the front of the firebox
A closed damper, or partially closed damper
Improper chimney design
Double sided, or see through fireplaces can sometimes cause chimney's to smoke Chimney Diagram

Solutions

Check to see if the chimney needs cleaning
Try to burn well seasoned dry wood
If you have a draft problem, you will need to have a wind turning kap installed, or a monsoon kap, to correct the problem
Always place your grate all of the way to the rear of the firewall
Make sure the damper is open fully
Prime the flue with your gas starter, or use rolled up newspaper
